Fresh fruit and veg forecast for the rest of October

The changing of the seasons brings a change to the seasonal produce we have available on the Market Stall and to order, supplied in the most part from local farmers across Devon and Cornwall.

To get the best out of the season over the next few weeks, we would recommend:

Cabbage (January King and Savoy), Kale (Green Curly, Cavalo Nero, Calabrese) and Romanesque Cauli. There’s also Salad Potatoes, Spring Onions, Apples, Mixed Squash, Celeriac, Swede and Carving Pumpkins ahead of Halloween.

If it’s best value produce you’re looking for:

Opt for Cabbage, Corn on the Cob, Calabrese Kale, Tricolour Peppers and Potatoes. For fruit, take your pick from Limes, Bramley Apples, Pomegranate and large unripened Mangos.

And for something novel:

You can find fresh chestnut mushrooms, cranberries and Sharon fruit.

Alongside our recommendations above, we have a wide range of produce from the following local farmers and growers:

Canara Farm, Falmouth

Red Padron Chillies and varieties of Mixed Squash are currently in season, alongside bunched baby carrots, Curly Green Kale, Flat Leaf Parsley and Pumpkins.

The November to December Winter Crop Plan includes Brussel Sprouts, Pointed Cabbage, Red Cabbage, Calabrese Broccoli, Celery, Celeriac, Leek and Purple Sprouting Broccoli.

A.J Lidstone and Sons, Kingsbridge

Bakers and Marfona (washed) varieties of potatoes

Four Elms Fruit Farm, Sidmouth

Varieties of apple include Bramley, Cox and Royal Gala

Place Barton Farm, Morleigh

Agria potatoes (unwashed)

Frank Clark & Sons, Cullompton

Parsnip box (5kg)

Hawthorn Garden, Crediton

Savoy Cabbage, bunched Beetroot and Leeks

West Trecott Farm, Okehampton

Swede and Turnip

Terawhiti Farm, Kingsbridge

Pointed Cabbage, Calabrese, varieties of Cauliflower, Celeriac, Rainbow Chard, varieties of Kale and Tenderstem Broccoli.

Disclaimer! Shopping local and supporting local farmers and growers does mean that the realities of adverse weather may sometimes interfere with the stock we have available, or how quickly we are able to source it for you.

– Please use hand gel on entry.

Coronavirus update 26 June 2020

A big thank you to all our wonderful customers for your support over the last three months. The first few weeks of the lockdown were very difficult for us dealing with the dramatic changes affecting all aspects of our business.

In recent weeks we have re-organised the business, employed additional help and now have a functioning delivery service in conjunction with Savills the Butchers, in addition to the village shop and post office.

Extended opening hours

From Sunday 5th July, we’ll be extending our opening hours as follows:

Monday – Friday 7.30am-5.30pm

Saturday 7.30am-2pm

Sunday 8am-12pm

Placing orders for collection or delivery

You can continue to submit orders via email to garydeare@aol.com or by phoning the shop during our new extended opening hours (above) on 01803 842148. If you happen to forget any items, please use a follow up email.

If you have any questions or queries about seasonal produce or other items ahead of placing an order, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

We’re now in a position to take on additional customers if you or anyone you know may want to utilise our personal, friendly and flexible service.

Deliveries

We will continue to serve all of our existing customers for as long as they need us, and have allocated Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for deliveries going forward. Collection can be arranged at any time to suit the customer.

To ensure we provide you with the freshest produce, we are introducing a cut-off time of 12 noon the day before, for customers placing an order for delivery.

We will be introducing geographical deliveries on our delivery days, and will continue to be flexible and do our best to deliver at a time that is most convenient for you.

As usual, we will contact you via telephone when your order has been put together in the shop to confirm the amount and day/time of delivery. Please don’t hesitate to confirm with us if you are unsure.

Shop visits

We will still be applying the government guidelines on social distancing to protect our staff and customers. Please still enter one customer (or family) at a time, entering from the front and exiting via the side door. While queuing please maintain a two meter gap.

Post Office

If you have a number of parcels to post and would like to avoid queuing, please contact us on 01803 842148 to make special arrangements.

An update on stock

As many of you will already be aware, we have seen an increased demand across many supplies which has led to difficulties with stock availability. Many producers are also reducing their product lines owing to supply chain issues, which means some general grocery products and varieties are no longer available.

We are working hard with our suppliers to make products available where possible, and below you can find a quick update on availability of products in the shop and for order.

Flour

We are no longer having difficulties supplying bread flour and this is now readily available to buy in store or order for delivery.

Self-raising flour is also coming in slowly and customers can order in advance if they so wish. Plain flour has returned to near normal supplies, as has yeast.

Supplies of speciality flour are still very erratic, so please request in advance and we will do our best to source these for you.

Fresh products

Fresh products are still readily available, especially where we use local suppliers. We have English strawberries, new season Cornish potatoes, asparagus (from just up the road), broad beans, rhubarb and new season New Zealand Cox’s apples plus a large range of exotic fruit.

And, if you’re looking to mix up your mushroom intake, chestnut mushrooms are also now available.

If you have any questions about stock availability, please give us a call on 01803 842148 or contact us here

Supplies donated to Brixham Food Bank

Thanks to donations from our lovely customers, we’ve sent off a box full of supplies just like the one below to Brixham Food Bank each week during the lockdown.

Did you know you can donate to Brixham Food Bank via Galleon Stores? All you need to do is arrange with us to credit your account up to a value of your choice. We will then arrange supplies up to this value, to be delivered and donated on your behalf.

Alternatively, you can ask to round up your bill and we will use the remaining value towards a donation.

For more information, give us a call on 01803 842148 or contact us here.

Ordering supplies from us during coronavirus – help us to help you

Now more than ever we are working hard to support our customers and the local community. While demand for orders increases week by week, we need your support to help ensure we can continue to do so.

We would politely ask all new and existing customers placing orders for collection or delivery with us to:

  • Include your name, address and phone number on each order you place with us
  • Create a new email each time you place an order with us
  • Include your order within the body of the email and not as an attachment
  • Where possible, spread orders towards Tues/Weds slots (rather than Fri/Sat) where we have more capacity
  • Try to avoid requesting add-ons once your order has been placed
  • Phone during our revised opening hours if placing an order by phone – we are using the time outside of these hours to prepare deliveries

Please note: we do not deliver on Mondays to allow our staff and volunteers a break. However you can still contact us via phone during the hours of 7.30am-2pm or email garydeare@aol.com.
