Seasonal Fruit and Veg

An update from the Market Stall – June 2021

The last few weeks of rain have certainly helped with vegetable growth both locally and further afield, but unfortunately provided a dramatic set back for soft fruit. Here are our top recommendations available on our Market Stall and to order for collection or delivery.

Local produce:

  • Cornish cauliflower – very large!
  • Green kale
  • Rhubarb

Produce from the wider English region:

  • Asparagus
  • Savoy cabbage
  • Beetroot
  • Leeks
  • Carrrots
  • Bramley apples
  • Some salad items including tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, flat lettuce, spring onions

Strawberries and raspberries will shortly be available, and for the best of the English produce we recommend the English tomatoes which are looking lovely.

Recommended produce from overseas – all good quality and low in price:

  • Nectarines
  • Peaches
  • Apricots
  • Mangoes

A final note from Gary on local produce:

Sunshine following rain will be excellent for all local produce currently in the ground. We await news of which produce we can source ready for customers from the Market Stall – particularly regarding  fresh peas, broad beans and runner beans. Keep an eye on our future reports for full details.

The current Market Stall update – April 2021

This time of year is always challenging for buying local produce and planning interesting, delicious meals around the limited choice.

This year, we’ve had the added unprecedented dry spell which has affected all harvests.

For those of you willing to take on the challenge, this is the current Market Stall update:

Local produce from Devon:

Parsnips, swede, celeriac, potatoes, red and white cabbage, green and red kale

Cornish new potatoes:

Cornish new potatoes are currently being supplied at very high prices. We hope to be stocking these by the end of the month once the prices have settled to a more normal level.

Cauliflowers, hispi and savoy cabbage:

Due to the lack of rain over the last few months, these are available in very limited quantities, poorer quality and more expensive than usual.

From the rest of England:

Asparagus and purple sprouting broccoli (both recommend by Gary), broccoli, strawberries, rhubarb, Braeburn and Gala apples, Bramley cooking apples, carrots, Cavolo Nero kale, beetroot, January King cabbage, spring greens and rainbow chard

Bringing good value from the rest of the world:

Aubergines, courgettes, mangoes, red grapes

All other products are available in store and to order. Orders can be placed via email to galleonstores1993@gmail.com or by phoning the shop on 01803 842148.

We’ll be sharing more about the stories behind the produce over the coming months, as we continue to provide updates on our Market Stall and fruit and veg forecasts.
